It was a winter's night back in 1988 when James called me to go on a pick-up with him.The fugitive was a white male in his early 30s.He had a history of violent crime with deadly weapons and was skipping on his bail. We had a solid lead to his location and a nothing better to do. This was a rare type of case for us,as we rarely did jobs for bailbondsman. Our prey also had a history of extensive drug and alcohol abuse. The potential for an interesting night was all there.

We pulled up in front of the house where our informant told us he was located.Lights were on. We had held a slim hope that we could catch the occupants sleeping. That wasn't going to happen. There were two of us and there were four doors into the house and lots of windows. Movement at the kitchen window. Front and back door then. I would go in the front and James would go in through the back. We approached the house by way of the garage, as to avoid being seen by the kitchen windows. The garage lights suddenly came to life bathing James and I in an icy glow surrounded by falling snow. It was actually quite calm until the front door flew open and a woman came racing out into the driveway right in front of us. We must have looked like cops, with guns drawn. She throws her hands in the air. She's been through this before."He's crazy! He's in the garage!" James heads over to the side garage door and I take the woman back to the porch. I'm asking her questions like "does he have a weapon?" & "Is he on anything?" I get a yes on both answers. He has a pistol in the small of his back and he is on angel dust. PCP. I'm sure he thinks he's invincible.I tell her to wait inside in the kitchen. I would have rather she stay outside, but it was really cold, and I didn't think she would stay there. I Went to the garge door. It was open. I glanced inside and saw the fugitive by a workbench. A few power tools, no car. I looked over and saw James at the side door watching through the window. I stepped in and was moving slowly over to the door where James was. As I stepped in, the perp turned and saw me. His eyes opened wide and I thought he was going to draw his pistol. Since I already had my .45 in my hand, this could be messier than I had hoped. He started laughing. Deep belly laughs. I was the funniest damn thing he had ever seen.I started edging towards James. As our bad guy turned to watch me, I could see the snubnose .38 in his belt. The bad guy's eyes went from me to the power tools on the bench, and then to the table saw. He moved to the saw as I moved to the door. He reached the saw first and flipped the switch to turn it on. I looked down to unlock the door as I heard a distinct 'TING' noise from the saw. As I quickly looked up and turned the knob for James I saw the fugitive look at his right hand and the we both looked down at his freshly severed pinky laying on the concrete. The fugitive started laughing even harder. James and I just couldn't believe this crazy fucker just cut his own finger off. Our bad guy slammed his hand back down onto the saw and in rapid succession 'ting' 'ting' 'ting' 'ting' and his other four fingers lay on the ground next to the pinky. Our fugitive lifted his hand and his eyes widened and he doubled over in his hysterics.Blood began to spray as the stumps of his fingers opened up from thier brief cauterization. James hit the power switch as I took the pistol from his belt. The bad guy just sat down. He didn't resist, he just laughed.

We strapped his wrists together and used zipstrips on his stumps so the stupid son-of-a-bitch wouldn't bleed to death. I grabbed a plastic bag and threw his fingers into it. I gave the bag to James to put some snow in it and I pulled the bad guy into the car. We drove over to the hospital and called the authorities from there. The doctors couldn't do anything with the fingers, from what I understand. To my knowledge 'Lefty' is going to be in prison for a long time.
